Welcome to Centerville, Iowa founded in 1846 as a coal mining town. Centerville is a vibrant and inviting community with over 14,000 residents in the county, 5,500 who live in Centerville our community, known as a shopping hub for the surrounding counties in both Iowa and Missouri, enables it to offer the amenities of a city with the charm of a small town. Centerville offers it all - Home of the World’s Largest Square and Historic Business District. Centerville has a plethora of unique shops and amenities ranging from upscale clothing to fine dining and everything in between. Our hometown square is home to numerous events throughout the year. It is also the destination of Pancake Day, a local celebration that brings tens of thousands of people together the last Saturday in September for a day of free entertainment, the big parade which generally lasts over 1 hour, beauty pageant, plenty of food, free pancakes, and time to celebrate togetherness. We are also home to Indian Hills Community College and a well-recognized local school system offering quality education for all ages.
Lakes, Rivers, and Parks – there is always something to do and large Iowa Whitetail Bucks are what we are known for - thousands of public acres and available private farms make hunting fun and very rewarding. Located only a few minutes south of “Iowa’s Ocean” Lake Rathbun, Centerville is the perfect location for many outdoor recreation activities: with 21,000 acres of public land, Iowa’s Ocean, Lake Rathbun occupies 11,000 of them, the perfect location for swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, a first class - state of the art resort complex, eight recreation camping parks, and 2 marinas. The city of Centerville includes the beautiful Morgan Cline City Park, a swimming pool, two large reservoirs with walking trails and fishing within the boundaries of Lelah Bradley Park.
Our largest asset is our residents, like most rural towns, it isn’t hard to not find a friendly face and a welcoming smile; however our residents are more than just that. They are motivated, kind people that genuinely care about our quaint town.
